Welcome to this week’s edition of iGR‘s Trailer Tuesday! We’ve got some nice new trailers for you, even one about an upcoming TV show! As always, hit up the comment section for your chance to win a free Redbox movie rental. We didn’t have any takers last week but hopefully you guys aren’t as terrible this week! Anyways, less talk, more video:
World War Z - This film is finally being released after being delayed for re-shoots after the ending supposedly didn’t go well with the studio. It was supposed to come out before Christmas this past year, a release date pretty fitting with all the Mayan calendar stuff going on around that time. Still, I’m not sure about this one. Brad Pitt (Fight Club) has done well with his roles recently so it’s a little odd to see him go back to big budget but ultimately mediocre-to-average films. Looking at his slate of upcoming releases though it looks more like an aberration than another. Directed by Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace), World War Z finally hits theaters on June 21, 2013.
Star Trek Into Darkness - This is an International trailer but is still pretty good, giving us more info on what the movie is actually about instead of just random clips of explosions and Captain Kirk joking around. This is going to be one of the biggest films of the Summer and I’m definitely looking forward to it. It opens in US theaters on May 17, 2024 but as the trailer indicates, the UK gets it a week earlier on March 10, 2013. Those lucky blokes.
Low Winter Sun - I’ve been looking forward to this for awhile. And with names like Mark Strong (Zero Dark Thirty), Lennie James (Lockout) and David Costabile (Breaking Bad) who can blame me? Still, this trailer definitely shows that my early interest won’t go unappreciated as it looks like AMC may have another dramatic hit on their hands and with both Breaking Bad and Mad Men ending sooner rather than later, they could use it. They have their hit in The Walking Dead but continuing to put out critical hits is important for the channel’s future success. Look for the 10 episode first season to premiere sometime this Summer.
Hummingbird - This trailer is pretty surprising because it sets up like a typical Jason Statham (The Transporter trilogy) film but slowly reveals that it may be a slight deviation from his normal formula with some potentially meaty dramatic scenes. Still, I can’t help but feel like it will be more like his usual stuff than a real departure but having a guy like Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) as the writer/director certainly doesn’t hurt.
White House Down - You might’ve noticed a very similar film in theaters now called Olympus Has Fallen but this one stars Channing Tatum (Magic Mike) and Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) instead of Gerard Butler (300) and Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) so it’s totally different! I must say, it’s pretty ridiculous that two films so similar are coming out within months of each but I enjoy these type of movies so I won’t complain too much, especially since they don’t make action movies like this (i.e. Die Hard-ish) anymore. The special effects do look better on this but that’s a no-brainer since it’s from Roland Emmerich (Independence Day). It hits theaters on June 28, 2013.
Pain & Gain - This is an odd film because normally the internet hates Michael Bay (Transformers trilogy) but because this is actually a low-budget (if you can call $25 million low-budget) film for him so the hate doesn’t seem to be as prevalent. I admit that I don’t hate the Transformers films as much as most and I’m a huge fan of Dwayne Johnson (Fast Five) so I was going to see this either way but the trailers have certainly made me actively look forward to it. The cast surrounding Johnson and Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) is pretty good too, including Rebel WIlson (Pitch Perfect), Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Ed Harris (The Rock), Ken Jeong (The Hangover trilogy) and Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker). It opens in theaters on April 26, 2013.
