Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed today that the studio will also produce Star Wars spin-off films, a business model that seems to resemble the one taken by Disney with Marvel. In November, it was rumored that Lawrence Kasden (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes,Mr. & Mrs. Smith) were hired by Disney to write for movies separate from Episodes 7-9 so Iger’s confirmation of that is nice to hear.
The idea of expanding the Star Wars universe is incredibly smart, from both a business and creative standpoint. It’s obvious there’s still a lot of interest in the franchise so as long as they make quality movies, it should make just as much as, if not more than what Marvel has for Disney. I’m sure they would still make a lot of money with mediocre movies but the reason Marvel has been so successful is because the individual films have all been good to great on their own, proving you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.
Stay tuned for more info about these spin-offs as we get it.
