JJ Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII

Well then, that came out of nowhere. JJ Abrams has signed on to direct the next installment in the Star Wars franchise: Episode VII. After stating he had turned down the opportunity not even a month ago, news broke today that producer and new LucasFilm head, Kathleen Kennedy, has been pursuing Abrams for quite some time. It’s interesting to note that they were also taking a hard look at Ben Affleck to helm the pic but that Abrams was the top choice.

I can’t say that I’m too surprised by the news, as Abrams always stuck out to me as one of the better choices rumored to be in the mix for the job (a lot better than Jon Favreau, that’s for sure). That said, the fact that he’s been the one responsible for reviving Star Trek does make this news slightly surprising because one would’ve assumed he would be sticking with one franchise over the other. At the same time, the very fact that he was able to revive a largely dead franchise (not to mention his revival of the Mission Impossible franchise as well) could be why he was the top choice to begin with.

Stay tuned for more news as we get it.
