NetherRealm Studios is obviously best known for the Mortal Kombat series. Back in 2011 NetherRealm was able to breathe life into the at times flaccid and phoned in fighting game. The 2011 spiritual reboot of the Mortal Kombat series introduced a new component to the series in the way of special X-Ray attacks. These attacks weren’t exactly the same as the series’ renowned fatalities before them. The X-Ray attacks acted as an insanely brutal table turning special attack. I enjoyed the X-Ray attacks even more than the series identifying fatalities I previously strived for.
Injustice: Gods Among Us will use the same X-Ray attack component (watered down a bit) to inflict enormous amounts of character specific hurt. That component alone has me more than a little excited to get some hands on time with Injustice. I literally can’t wait to see Flash take a lap around the world and slug Superman dead in the schnoz!
Things get even more interesting when you start thinking about the interactive fighting environments that will be adding to the on-screen chaos. Blast Solomon Grundy through the wall of the BatCave to reveal a brand new combat space. The intent here is to inject the super sized epic clashes we’re using to seeing in the Televison, Movies, and Comic Books these heroes and villains populate. The destructible and interactive environments will be a much welcomed addition to the fighting game space.
NetherRealm has been carefully selective when it comes to the roster available in Injustice: Gods Among Us to make sure the game play remains balanced. Here’s our confirmed character list thus far:
- - Deathstroke (the newest character announcement)
- - Green Lantern
- - Joker
- - Green Arrow
- - Batman
- - Harley Quinn
- - Superman
- - Wonder Woman
- - Catwoman
- - Flash
- - Solomon Grundy (Born on a Monday)
- - Nightwing
- - Cyborg
What will ultimately determine if this title achieves greatness or not will be in the combat mechanics and balance. The console Fighting Game space is ruled by Street Fighters, BlazBlues, Tekkens etc and their fans are sold on balanced characters and depth rather than graphics and gore. Injustice: Gods Among Us looks to be coming together very well and we are all anticipating April 2013. Check out the Collectors Edition’s of Injustice: Gods Among Us here.
